Thanks to comicbook.com who landed an exclusive interview with an official from Niantic, John Hanke, I now have a little more information on Pokemon Go! and the direction they’re headed. Some articles have spun a very positive outlook on the interview but I’m reading something a little different.
The interview alludes to only a few improvements but the rest seem pessimistic at best about where, how, and when updates are going to hit.
Here are a few quotes that make me suspicious.
“There are a certain set of Pokemon in the game right now. There are some rare ones that haven’t showed up yet that will be showing up. And there are some other ones in the universe, it’s something we’re excited about continuing with in the coming years,”
I always presume that any person that is representing a company is using very specific words for exact reasons. So everything you just read above sounds incredibly vague to me. We know there are rare Pokemon in the game right now, and other rare ones will be showing up but… what does he mean by “universe” exactly? and are they expecting us to wait “years” for for this?
“We have probably a tenth of the ideas we had when we kicked this project off two years ago in the initial release.”
So, he literally said that they have ONE TENTH of the ideas they had 2 years ago. So if they had 10 ideas 2 years ago, today they have 1. That’s not a good sign. Is this maybe a typo by the author? Maybe they meant “We had a tenth of the ideas 2 years ago”…
“Trading is not in Pokemon GO today, but it’s something we’re working on bringing to the product. Don’t get too excited – we need to make sure we can keep the servers up first!”
Hanke also teased that there is other functionality they want to bring to the game, including new Poke Stop customizations, including hospitals and other capabilities.
Ok, that’s cool, I understand that. But how about delivering, firstly, on the promises MADE by the pilot advertisement?
Fan Q&A started and the first question was whether there could be Breeding in the game. “Interesting idea – we’ve not been working on it”
oh yeah? why not? Isn’t that sort of an obvious direction?
Training update? “We said we’re gonna do it, we teased it, but he wants the date! He’s got a future as a project manager,” Hanke said of the small giggling child who asked point blank about it. “We don’t have an exact date, but it’s at the top of our priority list.”
“We’re gonna get there, but there’s no new Pokemon here today.”
“They’ll be in the game soon, dispensing advice and “you’ll be hearing from them in a variety of ways,”
That’s all they do?
I’m not sure what your takeaway is, but mine looks pretty gloomy. This FEELS like a Kickstarter that once makes its funding goal looses all interest in delivering on their promises. I won’t be spending a dime on this game. I’m still not convinced that it’s worth my time.
